The Clash Within: Democracy, Religious Violence and India’s Future by Martha Nussbaum

Martha Nussbaum, a professor at the University of Chicago Law School, chronicles the rise of the “Hindu right” in India in light of the 2002 Gujarat violence. Her book also has a description of the textbook wars in Indian history education. One of the ways her book might seem odd to a non-Bengali Indian is in terms of the large role it assigns to Tagore, putting him at par with Nehru and Gandhi. I wasn’t personally impressed with her diagnosis and I’m not much in agreement with her progressive education ideals, but I found her book worth reading.

Reviews: Pankaj Mishra in the New York Review of Books, Lucian Pye in Foreign Affairs (brief mention only), Rabbi Jayakaran on RedCliffe, Gerlad James Larson in the Journal of the American Academy of Religion.

Appearances: Chiasmos audio and video recording.
